Germany has objected to Türkiye’s application to the European Commission for the recognition of döner kebab as a traditional product in the EU. In response, Bereket Döner, a leading Turkish culinary institution, has presented an academic study to strengthen Türkiye’s case.
At a press conference held in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner unveiled evidence asserting the Turkish origins of döner kebab, firmly rebutting Germany’s objections.
“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” stated Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”
The study, Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, presents artefacts, historical engravings, and documents linking the dish to the Ottoman period, reinforcing its status as a symbol of Turkish culinary heritage and a cultural bridge.
Döner: A Tradition of Unity
“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” Tekdemir emphasised. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”
In tandem with defending the cultural significance of döner, Bereket Döner has announced its intention to expand its Döner Point brand across Europe. The rollout begins in Germany, with plans to showcase the authentic taste of Turkish döner in major cities.
“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” said Tekdemir. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”
Bereket Döner’s dedication to preserving the legacy of Turkish döner extends beyond food, highlighting its role in fostering cross-cultural understanding.
