Paramount Pictures has announced that the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise has reached a major milestone, surpassing $1 billion in total global box office receipts. The success comes as audiences flock to cinemas worldwide to watch Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which continues to dominate at the box office.
The Sonic the Hedgehog film series, based on the popular SEGA video game, debuted in February 2020 with the first film, followed by Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in April 2022. The combined global earnings of these two films reached $725.2 million, alongside an additional $181 million in consumer spending from home entertainment rentals and purchases.
The latest instalment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, was released in December 2024, and has already proven to be a massive success. The film received an “A” CinemaScore and achieved a Certified Fresh rating of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best-reviewed video game film adaptation of all time. In addition, the film scored an impressive 96% on the Verified Hot Popcornmeter, a measure of audience excitement and engagement.
To date, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has earned over $312 million globally, with the film enjoying a #1 domestic opening and its biggest international debut to date. The film also reached $100 million in international box office gross faster than its predecessors, showing continued growth for the franchise.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sees the return of the original cast, including Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, alongside Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Krysten Ritter, Lee Majdoub, and many others. The film also introduces new characters, with Idris Elba voicing Knuckles and Keanu Reeves joining the cast as Shadow, a new villain with mysterious powers. Directed by Jeff Fowler, who has helmed all three films in the series, the movie follows Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails as they battle against the formidable Shadow to save the world.
In April 2024, Paramount also launched a spinoff series, Knuckles, on its streaming service, Paramount+. The show has already become a hit, achieving over 11 million global hours in its first 28 days, making it the most-watched Kids & Family series on the platform.
The success of the Sonic franchise has led to the announcement of a fourth film in development, as well as more content for both the big screen and streaming platforms. Paramount is confident the franchise has the potential for even greater success in the future, with plans to continue expanding the Sonic universe.
Neal H. Moritz, producer of the films, expressed his excitement at the response from fans, saying, “We are so overjoyed with the amazing response to the Sonic the Hedgehog films from audiences and fans around the world. Their passion, support, and love for these characters is what drives us to continue creating fast, funny, and action-packed stories.”
Paramount Pictures President & CEO Brian Robbins also praised the franchise’s success, stating, “The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has become an unstoppable cultural force with limitless potential. We’re excited to continue delivering stories and characters that resonate with audiences around the world.”
As the franchise continues to grow, Sonic the Hedgehog shows no signs of slowing down, with more adventures and spin-offs set to captivate audiences globally.
